Does older mean better?

Age changes whisky, but the number is not a quality score.

01

What the number actually means

An age statement gives the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. A 12-year-old expression may contain older casks, but none of its whisky can be younger than twelve years.

02

What time adds

Years in oak can soften raw spirit, add vanilla and spice, and create deeper aromas. Climate, cask history, warehouse conditions and spirit character matter just as much as the number.

03

When older becomes different—not better

Long maturation can mute fresh fruit or let oak dominate. Some whiskies are brightest and most distinctive when relatively young, especially in warm climates where maturation proceeds quickly.
