What does a cask do?
Oak is an ingredient, not simply a container.
The spirit moves through wood
As warehouse temperatures change, spirit moves into and out of the oak. It extracts flavour compounds while oxygen and time gradually transform harsher elements.
Previous contents matter
Ex-bourbon casks often suggest vanilla, coconut and light sweetness. Casks seasoned with sherry may bring dried fruit, nuts and spice. Wine, rum and fortified-wine casks create other directions.
Colour can offer clues—not proof
Darker whisky may have spent time in active oak, but colour varies naturally and can sometimes be adjusted with permitted caramel colouring. Your nose and palate remain more useful than shade.
