How to choose your first bottle
Ignore the shelf theatre. Start with four useful questions.
What flavours already appeal to you?
Think beyond whisky. Do you enjoy vanilla, dried fruit, citrus, baking spice, dark chocolate or smoke? Begin with familiar flavours rather than a famous region.
How will you drink it?
A versatile blend can work neatly, over ice and in a highball. A concentrated single malt may be more rewarding for slow sipping. Choose for your real habits, not an imagined tasting ritual.
How adventurous do you feel?
For a safe introduction, choose soft, honeyed or fruity. If smoke and bold food already appeal to you, a lightly peated malt may be more exciting.
What is your comfortable budget?
You do not need an old or rare bottle. Widely available core expressions are often the best place to learn because you can taste them again and compare your impressions.
